THE SUN

The Romans called the sun "Sol".

The Greeks called the sun "Helios".

The sun was created about 5 billion years ago, and will be around for another 5 billion years.

The sun is the only star that is in our solar system. It is a low mass star which means it is very small.

All eight planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) revolve around the sun because it is the center of our solar system.

The diameter of the sun is about 1,390,000 kilometers.

The sun is a giant ball of gas.  It's about 27% heilum and 72% hydrogen. The sun contains small amounts of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, nickel, gold, uranium, and other elements which make up the other 1%. Only .000000000005 percent of the sun's energy reaches the earth, which is less than a trillionth of the sun's total radiation. The surface of the sun spins faster when its at the equator, and every 25.4 days it makes one complete rotation. At the poles, the sun makes a full rotation every 33 days instead of 25.4.

The distance between the sun and the earth is 1 AU (Astronomical Unit.) 1 AU=149,597,870.691

The core of the sun is 15,000,000 degrees celcius.

The radiative zone is 2,500,000 degrees celcius.

The convective zone is 1,000,000 degrees celcius.

The photospere is 6,000  degrees celcius.

The chromosphere is 4000 degrees celcius.

The corona is 1,000,000 degrees celcius.

Sunspots are the "cool" regions of the sun. They are only about 3,800 degrees celcius. Sunspots can sometimes get very large, up to 50,000 kilometers in diameter. Sunspots are caused by complicated interactions with the sun's magnetic field, and it's not very well understood how they are made.
