The Moon
Written by: Nick Pizzale
Discovery-By the latins and named luna.
Origin/Description of name- The name of the moon came from the latin word by the romans, Selene and Artemis. While the moon orbits, it appears to wobble a bit due to it's slightly non- circular orbit. The moon's orbit is locked, which means that the same side of the moon is always facing the earth except for a few degrees on certain accasions.
Size- The diameter of the moon is 3476 km. The weight of the moon is 7.35e22 kg. Surface area:14,645,750 sq. miles.
Temperature- The moon has a lack of an atmosphere such as the earth does. This cases the moon to have much more temperature variations than the earth does even though the earth and moon are relatively the sanme distance from The Sun. In the day it is hotter then it it is on the earth in the day. And in the night it is much colder on the moon then it is at night on the earth. Ranges from -387 to 253 degrees F.
Origin of body- It is thought that if it werent for the moon then human or any tyope of life would not exist on earth.
Orbit- Makes a complete orbit around the earth about every 27.3 days. The moon is located 384,400 km from earth. (238,900 miles)
Structure and Composition- The moon has a crust that is roughly 68 km thick. inside the moon there is probably a core that is about the size of 2% of the moon's mass.
Notable features- From what we humans see of the moon a large white planet that brings us light in the nights, there is a lot more to the moon that we dont see. There are many craters on the moon's surface from commets and asteroids etc. slamming into it.
Any unique information, mythologies, etc. The moon has remained the same or unchanging for the past 2.5 billion years, except for the accasional crater created by an asteroid impacting it.
Photos of the moon:

The moon is very important to earth and humans on earth. The effects that the moon has on earth are very great. The moon is actually what causes the gravitational pulling on bodies of water and therefore creates what are known as waves. The moon also effects the earths orbit around The Sun.
