Hera was a daughter of Rhea and Cronus, and a sister of Zeus. Later, Hera became wife to Zeus. She was the goddess of marriage and birth. The children of Hera and Zeus were the smith-god, Hephaestus; the goddess of youth, Hebe; and the god of war, Ares. Hera was very jealous of Zeus's many affairs, and harshly dealt with any rivals, both mortal and not. Even Zeus was scared of her. Occasionally, when he got angry, he chained her to Mount Olympus by attaching anvils to her feet. Most of the time, to protect his illigitimate children, Zeus turned them into animals or hid them.
